The end of the year is here. The end of the decade is here. And maybe you went on a run every day, did a race every month and whoopee for you. But if you’re like the rest of us, making time for that 5K was a little harder. So, grab your tennis shoes and hit the pavement for these must-do South Sound races—just before the New Year’s Eve ball drops (or maybe a bit after).
Christmas Eve Dash/Ugly Sweater 5K
You know what’s better than wearing the itchy, homemade (read: ugly) holiday sweater? Running as fast as you can to take it off. About a 5K distance. Best of all, no one will want you to wear the dirty, smelly, sweaty thing to dinner anyway.
Jingle Bell Run
Yes, this is a 3-mile race around Wright Park in Tacoma. But more importantly, this Jingle Bell Run is a costume contest—the best holiday-themed costume wins a special prize. Take the pine-needle droppings from around your tree and paint a gold star on your forehead. Boom! You’re a Christmas tree. Strollers and dogs on a leash are welcome.
- When: December 24. First race starts at 8:30 a.m. and second race at 10:30 a.m. Costume contest is 30 minutes prior to race start
- Where: Wright Park in Tacoma

Resolutions Run Series
Technically this race is in 2020, but we’re including it in this round-up anyway. Don’t start the new year with broken resolutions and forgotten goals—sign up for this four-race series with the Tacoma City Running Club. The first race is 5 miles or 5K and it only gets longer from there.
- When: First race is January 4, 2020. Full series information here
- Where: Steilacoom High School in Steilacoom

If winter running just isn’t your thing (even if you’ve got a Santa hat on) then make some plans for spring through fall 2020. Race near Mount Rainier, along the Salish Sea and through the Grit City itself. Read up on sweet summer runs and races that you don’t want to miss.
